What is psychological trauma and what makes it happen

The course is a holistic undertaking for dealing with the participants’ psychological trauma and splitting. We will learn about the different types of trauma that may occur in different stages of life. We will learn the theory behind to understand what in fact transpires.

Trauma takes place in situations when we do not get the help and emotional support, we need in a situation of overwhelm and helplessness. In order to survive the intense stress, we must “split-off” the experience. As a result, the experience does not get fully integrated in our psyche.

Splittings as a result of trauma causes us to lose access to parts of ourselves. These parts can be feelings, memories and our very own life force. This can degrade our relationships and our ability to meet life’s challenges in a healthy way. Instead we end up in a state of fight, flight or freeze (dissociation). In addition, our split-off parts are in a constant alert, which demands an immense amount of energy from us.

How to get out of psychological traumas

With trauma processing and constellations, the original events are brought to light and split-off life energy can be recovered. This enables changes on a physical and psychological level. Additionally, in life as a whole – in relation to other people and in our experience of life. Life is lived in the span between symbiosis and autonomy. In the course you will learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy symbiosis, and the difference between true and false autonomy. The course is based on a modern understanding of the correlation between body and mind/psyche.

About trauma and relationships

To better understand ourselves we need to understand more about relationships, attachment / bonding and the attachment process. When we are children, we need attachment to other people. First and foremost, we attach to our mother and later on with our father.

If the mother is traumatized the child is forced to attach to her through her trauma. This happens through the sensitive process of tuning and imitation between mother and child. This process helps shape and develop the child’s brain and nervous system especially in the earliest and most formative stage of life. This is how traumatic experiences are transmitted to the next generation through the emotional bonding and attachment process.

A bonding trauma can often develop into what we call a symbiotic trauma. This means that the mother is entirely preoccupied with herself, and is unable to see and mirror the child as a separate individual. The child is then unable to “find themselves” and has no other choice but to “internalize the mother” in their own psyche. It becomes difficult to separate between one’s own feelings and those taken over from parents or grandparents.

Originally the trauma is created in relation to the mother, and only thereafter to the father. If the attachment to the mother is characterized by traumatization, we go from being a subject to becoming an object. This happens precisely because we have not been mirrored as a separate individual. The way back is to get in relation to one’s own split-off parts and thus go from object to subject again. If we cannot be in relationship with ourselves, we cannot be in relationship with others either.

Multigenerational traumawork

The human psyche is multigenerational. We may be affected by events at least four generations back. Healing of psychological damage can occur by unblocking energy and emotions, throughout the traumatized bonding system into which the individual is interwoven.

Phenomenological field

Throughout the course you will learn to recognize various “I”-parts, survival-parts, trauma-parts and healthy parts. You will also learn to distinguish between taken over parts from a symbiotic trauma and an individual’s own healthy impulses. This will enable you to enter into healthy relationships and develop true autonomy. The method is phenomenological and will be explained step by step.
